Anatomical terms
The LCT-01 makes heavy usage of anatomical terms of location. It makes us sound like doctors and taxonomists, which is on-brand for who we aspire to be. Unfortunately, sewists get confused sometimes because overlock stitch is competing with synapomorphy for their limited dictionary space.
Regardless, we’re here to help, because not everyone got past high school biology and its "kingdom, phylum, class, order," (what were the four other ranks after that?) song and dance.
- Ventral is the front.
- Doctors that deal with humans often say anterior but we prefer ventral.
- Dorsal is the back.
- Doctors that deal with humans often say posterior but we prefer dorsal.
- Left and right are always from your perspective; if you hug someone, your left shoulder is probably going to touch their right shoulder.
- Inferior and superior mean “below” and “above”. They are not value judgements on your sewing. Don’t feel bad about it; you’re probably doing a great job on that sewing machine.
- Medial and lateral mean center and side. Your nose is medial, while your eyes are lateral to them; they’re off to the side.
- Exterior and interior mean outside and inside respectively. The right side of your fabric is the exterior and the wrong side is the interior.
Now that we have the basic building blocks, let’s combine them.
- Ventral medial would be center front. So when we speak of the ventral medial button row (VMBR), we are talking about those buttons down the front.
- Ventral lateral would be on the front, but to the side.
- The border between ventral lateral and either left or right lateral gets fuzzy because humans are not rectangles, and cows are not spheres.

This neatly folded shirt has a ventral medial button row.
More contrived terms
We’ve used these terms before in our notes.
- The coronal clavicular seam would be the seam that holds the ventral bodice piece and dorsal bodice piece together, running between both the bodice–sleeve seam.
- That label on the back of clothing? We’d describe it as being at the superiormost medial point of the dorsal interior surface of the garment.
Body parts
- The transpyloric plane is a line slightly superior to where your belly button / navel is. We often say that crop tops “expose the transpyloric plane”.
- The manubrium is the top part of your sternum (breastbone), You can feel it inferior to your neck between your clavicles.
- The clavicle is a horizontal bone that connects your shoulder blade to your sternum.
By the way, we're not your doctor. This isn't a replacement for studying from an actual medical textbook. If we get a term wrong, it's embarassing and we'll just publish a correction, but if a surgeon gets a term wrong, someone dies. Don't get charged with manslaughter.
